The ninth Asian Art Biennial got underway Nov. 16 at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in the central city of Taichung, showcasing the diversity and vitality of the continent’s creative sphere.
Jointly organized by curators from Taiwan, Armenia, South Korea, Türkiye and the Philippines, the exhibition titled “How To Hold Your Breath” showcases 83 works by artists from over 20 countries and will run through March. 2, 2025, the Ministry of Culture said.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, MOC Secretary General Lin Hong-yi said that the ministry’s mission is to support local artistic and cultural activities and to connect Taiwan with the broader Asian and global artistic communities. He lauded the event’s deep exploration of the human condition, different cultures and ethnicities, and the environment through diverse creative media.
NTMOFA Director Chen Kuang-yi said that since its inception in 2007, the biennial has become one of the most iconic art shows in Asia. The increased focus on bringing together cross-disciplinary influences in recent years is evident in the wide-ranging backgrounds of this year’s participating artists, she added.
According to the MOC, a series of events spanning artist talks, experimental performances, film screenings, guided tours, research forums and participatory workshops is being held alongside the exhibition.
The Asian Art Biennial is committed to spotlighting the development of contemporary Asian art and has become a robust platform for creatives from across the continent to discuss their unique beliefs and perspectives, as well as emerging topics and trends, the MOC added. (POC-E)
