The Ministry of Education held a global forum on digital transformation earlier this month in Taipei City that encouraged leadership at senior high schools with digital learning strengths to lead other schools in their regions to boost the overall quality of education.

Organized by the ministry’s K-12 Education Administration, the event was attended by around 300 teachers and students. Deputy Education Minister Yeh Ping-cheng delivered a keynote speech and experts hosted several seminars and workshops to discuss topics ranging from digital teaching curriculum design to integrated applications of artificial intelligence tools in teaching and assessment.

The deputy minister focused on new thinking in the era of artificial intelligence and emphasized the importance of cultivating students’ curiosity and independent learning ability, saying that teachers should guide them to open course resources so they can learn by themselves. The ministry is promoting initiatives including the Taiwan AI College Alliance and the adoption of online AI courses in senior high schools, Yeh continued, adding that such online studies are expected to help reduce the educational resources gap between urban and rural areas.

Following his remarks, Azrina Azmi, the education lead for Southeast Asia at Google, introduced the company’s Future of Education report and AI tool integration for Google Workspace and listed successful digital transformation examples from Japan, Malaysia and Thailand. She stressed the importance of teacher training and discussed the use of digital tools such as Google Classroom to improve teaching efficiency.

According to the MOE, the forum was held under an ongoing initiative for leading schools in digital learning in line with national curriculum guidelines. The program aims to help teachers use innovative technology in teaching to enhance students’ independent learning abilities, cross-field problem-solving skills and global perspectives, the ministry added.
