The National Development Council announced the launch of Taiwan’s digital nomad visa Dec. 20 in the southern city of Tainan, reflecting the government’s commitment to attracting digital professionals from around the world.

Set to take effect in January 2025, the visa allows foreign digital professionals to stay in Taiwan for up to six months. Speaking at the event, which was attended by officials and private sector representatives from Japan and South Korea, NDC Minister Liu Chin-ching cited a recent report by U.K.-based consulting firm Global Citizen Solutions that ranks Taiwan first in Asia for digital nomads, adding that the country’s food, living conditions and tourist attractions are all globally recognized.

In accordance with President Lai Ching-te’s directives, the government plans to invest NT$150 billion (US$4.59 billion) in supporting innovative entrepreneurship each year, Liu said. Taiwan is especially eager to see digital nomads arrive from its neighbors like Japan and South Korea, he added.

Echoing Liu’s remarks, Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che said his city was named by CNN Travel as a top 24 destination for 2024. In addition to its rich cultural and historical heritage, Tainan is also a high-tech hub and home to the digital nomad service center jointly set up by the NDC and local government. He welcomed professionals from around the world to settle in and work in Tainan. (SFC-E)
