The ROC Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed Sept. 25 U.S. support of Taiwan’s participation in the 38th International Civil Aviation Organization assembly in Montreal, Canada.

“We appreciate that the U.S. has always taken the stance of backing Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations and the positive remarks it has made,” the MOFA said.

“This opportunity will be fully used by the ROC government to strengthen joint cooperation with ICAO members, including the U.S., and contribute to creating a seamless global aviation safety network.”

The MOFA made the comments following the U.S. Department of State’s remarks in a statement released Sept. 24 in Washington.

According to the statement, the U.S. welcomes the ICAO Council President Roberto Kobeh Gonzalez’s invitation for Taiwan civil aviation officials to participate as his guests in the triennial event.

“We are encouraged to see that this arrangement was reached through international cooperation and appreciate the flexibility and support of both ICAO and its members. Taiwan’s active participation in this year’s assembly will promote global aviation safety and security, and will strengthen ICAO as an institution,” the statement said.

Taiwan’s meaningful participation in multilateral organizations that do not require statehood for membership will continue to be supported by the U.S., the statement added.

The Taiwan delegation, headed by Shen Chi, director-general of the Civil Aeronautics Administration under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, departed Sept. 22 for the 11-day event that wraps up Oct. 4. (KML-JSM)
