“Over the last six years, Taipei and Beijing have significantly advanced bilateral relations on the back of the 1992 consensus of one China with respective interpretations,” Wang said. “We will continue promoting meaningful dialogue and interaction under this framework going forward.”
Wang made the remarks at a meeting with Zhang Zhijun, director of Beijing-based Taiwan Affairs Office, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders’ meeting. He was in Beijing as an advisor to former Vice President Vincent C. Siew, head of Taiwan’s APEC contingent.
In addition to the 1992 consensus, Wang discussed with his mainland Chinese counterpart follow-up negotiations under the Cross-Straits Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA); establishing reciprocal offices; furthering exchanges across the areas of culture, education, technology and youth; and the possibility of mainland Chinese tourists transiting through Taiwan.
Expanding cooperation on regional economic integration was another issue on the agenda, he said, with the MAC and TAO expected to launch preparations in the near future for talks in this regard. “Both sides remain committed to facilitating communications, building mutual trust and fostering goodwill in future endeavors.”
This was the sixth time for Wang to meet Zhang since their first encounter at last year’s APEC summit in Bali, Indonesia. (YHC-JSM)
