Taiwan has reciprocal driver’s license agreements with all 10 Canadian provinces following the signing April 17 of a pact with Newfoundland and Labrador, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Taking immediate effect, the accord stipulates that Republic of China (Taiwan) nationals residing in the province with a valid ROC driver’s license are exempt from the road test and written exam. They can obtain a Class 5, or standard, vehicle license upon completion of a regular eye exam.

Canadians who hold a driver’s license from their home nation and a valid Alien Resident Certificate are similarly exempt from Taiwan’s road test and written exam.

According to the MOFA, Taiwan has sealed reciprocal driver’s license agreements with the provinces since 2008 to strengthen convenience and promote people-to-people and business exchanges between the two sides. As of the end of last year, a total 4,848 locals had benefited from the pacts, the ministry said.

In addition to Canada, Taiwan has concluded reciprocal driver’s license accords with 29 U.S. states and territories; 12 European nations; 26 countries and territories in the Asia-Pacific, among them six states of Australia; 12 nations in Central and South America; and 15 countries and territories in Africa and the Middle East, including nine provinces of South Africa.
