A total of 11 Taiwan tertiary education institutions made the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings released June 6, the best-ever result for the country in the annual survey of global schools established less than 50 years ago.
Top performers were Taipei City’s National Taiwan University of Science and Technology and National Yang-Ming University. The former moved up two spots to 57th from the 2017 edition, while the latter ranked 101st-150th.
Also noteworthy was Chang Gung University in northern Taiwan’s Taoyuan City and National Sun Yat-Sen University Kaohsiung City, southern Taiwan. Both made the 151st-200th category.
Several institutions joined the 201st-250th club for the first time: I-shou University in Kaohsiung, National Dong Hwa University in eastern Taiwan’s Hualien County and National Taipei University.
Others in the category are Asia University and Feng Chia University in Taichung City, central Taiwan; National Chung Cheng University in Chiayi County, southern Taiwan; and Yuan Ze University in Taoyuan.
Topping the table this year is Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, followed by Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Paris Sciences and Lettres University in France and Maastricht University in the Netherlands.
The remainder of the top 10 comprises Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology; City University of Hong Kong; Pohang University of Science and Technology in South Korea; Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Italy; and University of Alabama at Birmingham in the U.S.
According to THE, schools focusing on science and technology are the biggest improvers overall, with six finishing among the 10 best worldwide.
Launched in 2012, the rankings assess universities from 55 countries and territories through 13 performance indicators in areas like international outlook, research and teaching environments. (CPY-E)
