An online broadcast in Korean was launched July 1 by Taipei City-based Radio Taiwan International as part of government efforts promoting enhanced cultural and people-to-people exchanges between the neighboring Asian countries.

Catering to South Koreans living in or visiting Taiwan, the broadcast features programs centered on an array of topics like art galleries, exhibitions, cuisine, Mandarin learning tips, museums, performing arts, public transportation and tourism.

Plans are also in the pipeline for tailored content spotlighting the treasures of Taipei-based National Palace Museum and major events such as Taichung World Flora Expo taking place Nov. 3 to April 24, 2019 in the central Taiwan city.

Established in 1928 as Central Broadcasting System in the Chinese city of Nanjing, RTI relocated to Taipei in 1949 with the Republic of China (Taiwan) government. It is tasked with sharing news and information on Taiwan with the world in 13 languages.

The broadcast is the latest government initiative aimed at deepening the Taiwan-South Korea friendship. On June 27, the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding regarding automatic immigration clearance at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in northern Taiwan.

Initiated the same day, the service enables low-risk travelers from Taiwan and South Korea to enjoy pre-approved arrival at select ports of entry after registering with Taiwan’s e-Gate system and South Korea’s Smart Entry Service.

The latest statistics from the Ministry of the Interior reveal that over the past year, Taiwan welcomed 1.05 million arrivals from South Korea—a number trailing only China, Japan and Hong Kong in that order. During the same period, Taiwan travelers made 890,000 trips to the East Asian nation. (SFC-E)
