Two U.S. women’s basketball coaches named as sports envoys to Taiwan are visiting the nation July 16-22 to strengthen exchanges and spotlight enduring bilateral cooperation and friendship in the 40th year of the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA40).

Appointed by the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Sports Diplomacy, Holly Warlick, former coach at the University of Tennessee, and Carol Jue, current coach at Chapman University, are scheduled to take part in activities spanning basketball clinics, seminars and workshops.

The pair will share their expertise and promote women’s leadership in sports at two public lectures hosted by the American Institute in Taiwan. Warlick will speak at an event titled “The Transformative Nature of Sports on Women and Girls” July 18 in Taipei City, and Jue will present at a seminar headlined “Sports and Achieving Your Dreams” July 21 in the southern city of Kaohsiung.

Warlick is a member of the U.S. Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. Prior to coaching, she played point guard for UT from 1976-1980 and won gold on the U.S. women’s basketball team in the R. William Jones Cup in 1979.

Heading the program at Chapman University for over 16 years, Jue has led the school to more than 300 victories, making her its all-time leader in wins as women’s basketball coach.

In addition to their speaking appearances, they will be guests of honor at the Buddha’s Light International Association Cup University Basketball Tournament running July 16-21 in Kaohsiung, AIT said.

The TRA was signed into law April 10, 1979, following the switch of recognition from Taipei to Beijing by the U.S. It authorizes the continuation of substantive relations between the two sides in the absence of diplomatic ties, and is an important factor in preserving Indo-Pacific peace, stability and security.
