The English version of an illustrated book about Taiwanese culture by prominent French author and illustrator Nicole Lambert was unveiled May 10.

“Taiwan, Island of Treasures” is a pictorial work based on Lambert’s observations during a one-month visit in Taiwan at the invitation of the Egret Culture and Education Foundation, which published the book in French and traditional Chinese in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

The hardback features vivid depictions of Taiwan’s folk religions, indigenous cultures, traditional performance arts and unique street eats, juxtaposed with high-tech projects and skyscraper-filled urban scenes.

The English version was translated by Christiane Bonneville, whose husband Patrick Bonneville is the director of the French Institute in Taipei.

“Many French people have been so enthralled by Taiwanese culture that they keep coming back,” the director said at the news conference, adding that he hoped the book can help promote the beauty of Taiwan.

In her work, Lambert described Taiwan as “at once the cradle of the latest technology and a haven for the arts and traditions of ancient China.”

“The treasure of this island lies in its people,” she wrote. “Taiwanese people share strong values: joyfulness, a deeply rooted sense of family, a passionate work ethic and, last but not least, they have a profoundly positive spirit.”

Known for her comic strip series “Les triples” in the French magazine Madame Figaro since 1983, Lambert has been a fashion designer and illustrator for over 27 years.

A Japanese version is slated for publication by the end of 2011, according to the foundation. (THN)
