TaiwanPlus, an English-language video and news platform, was launched Aug. 30 in Taipei City as part of government efforts to share the country’s values and stories with the world, according to the Presidential Office.

In a special video message marking the launch, President Tsai Ing-wen said the platform is expected to promote Taiwan’s experiences and perspectives on regional and global affairs while highlighting the country’s contributions to the international community.

The platform will also serve as showcase for the achievements and diversity of Taiwan as a vibrant democracy in which freedom of speech and expression are cherished and protected, Tsai said. This is anticipated as helping people around the world understand the country’s resilience and draw inspiration, she added.

Taiwan’s story deserves to be told by local voices in new ways, Tsai said, adding that such a platform is important at this moment as the government continues growing global engagement and promoting what the country stands for.

During the physical launch ceremony at National Taiwan Museum in Taipei, Vice President Lai Ching-te said the platform is a major government initiative to harness the power of public resources in sharing Taiwan’s perspectives and offering worldwide audiences a fresh perspective on the country.

Another important mission of the platform, Lai said, is to help advance the policy of building Taiwan into a bilingual nation by 2030 through enhancing the people’s English proficiency levels. TaiwanPlus will play a key role in this regard with related programming, he added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said “#Taiwan is one of the world’s great stories worthy of sharing far & wide. It’s got all the right elements: freedom, democracy, diversity, beauty, courage, compassion & an unrelenting desire to do good on distant shores. Follow #TaiwanPlus & experience our #IslandOfResilience.” (SFC-E)
