Of the 10 golds, seven were in Olympic disciplines with the remainder in bowling, karate and golf. The final top-of-the-podium finish went to Ku Tsui-ping in the women’s under-50 kilogram karate Oct. 4, the last day of the games.
Ku, competing in her first games, triumphed 8-3 over Yekaterina Khupovets of Kazakhstan. “My dreams finally came true,” the indigenous Bunun growing up without parents in Nantou County said.
According to Ku, a first-year student at National Taipei University, her next targets are November’s World Cup in Germany and the 2020 Olympic Games, if karate is added to the discipline lineup.
Taiwan’s women built on Ku’s success and further excelled in the karate. Wen Tzu-yun took gold in the women’s under-55 kilogram class and Chao Jou claimed bronze in the under-68 kilogram class. (SSC-JSM)
