An international pottery master workshop concluded Oct. 29 at Zhunan Snake Kiln in Miaoli County, with 10 artisans from seven countries turning out leading-edge examples of wood-fired pottery.

Hailing from Taiwan, Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Singapore and Switzerland, the masters created original pieces based on the theme Art of Tea during the 10-day event. The finished products boast a rich, earthy appearance characterized by refined artistry.

“Zhunan is the best-preserved traditional kiln still in use in Taiwan,” owner Deng Shu-hui said. “These artists were able to get the most out of our wood-fired huashi kiln and fashion unique ceramic aesthetics using the three classical elements of ash, earth and fire.”

Declared a historic building in 2001, the kiln underwent extensive restoration in 2010 and was turned into a living museum preserving the heritage of Taiwan’s ceramic culture and pottery-making for future generations.

According to Deng, the workshop was a resounding success, providing a rare opportunity for overseas artists to collaborate and learn more about Taiwan’s high-temperature wood-fired pottery.

Singaporean artist Alvin Tan said he enjoyed the experience of producing ceramics at Zhunan. “Strict regulations on kiln operations in my home country limit experiments in pottery-making. This is a truly an incomparable experience of inspiration and affirmation.”

All of the pottery master workshop creations are set for display in an upcoming exhibition at Northern Miaoli Art Center in Zhunan Township. (YHC-JSM)
