Vice Foreign Minister Alexander Tah-ray Yui attended an event welcoming Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel David Lau at the Jeffrey D. Schwartz Jewish Community Center Feb. 21 in Taipei City, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Organized by the Jeffrey D. Schwartz Na Tang Jewish Taiwan Cultural Association (JTCA), the event was also attended by leaders of Jewish communities in more than 10 countries across the Asia-Pacific, as well as political figures and members of the business sector.

According to Yui, Taiwan and Israel are partners that share the values of freedom and democracy. Since the establishment of reciprocal representative offices 30 years ago, the two countries have concluded 31 cooperation pacts in areas spanning civil aviation, health and medicine, science and technology, social services, social welfare and visa-exempt entry, he added.

It is hoped that JTCA and the community center will continue proposing initiatives and organizing events that promote people-to-people exchanges and bilateral cooperation across the board, the vice minister said.

In response, Schwartz called the chief rabbi’s visit a milestone for the community center, adding that it was his honor to organize the event inviting regional Jewish leaders to learn more about democratic Taiwan.

Schwartz also took the opportunity to thank the government of Taiwan for its assistance in establishing the community centerwhich plays a pivotal role in enhancing the public’s understanding of Jewish culture. (SFC-E)
