The Executive Yuan Department of Gender Equality released the 2024 Gender at A Glance report Jan. 29. Conducted since 2006, the research adopts the same assessment methodology as the annual gender equality survey published by the U.N. Development Program.

The report highlights government policy and progress on gender equality in Taiwan, such as the consistently high proportion of elected female politicians and a record high 25.2 percent of males in those who applied for parental leave in the survey period.

Information cited in the report includes the latest Social Institution and Gender Index compiled by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, in which Taiwan was included for the first time this year. In this survey of 179 countries and territories that measures discrimination against women in social institutions, the country was ranked sixth globally and first in Asia.

The DGE report employed various standards to evaluate Taiwan’s standing. It used the European Institute for Gender Equality’s 2022 Gender Equality Index to evaluate Taiwan as 12th globally; it adopted the UNDP 2021 Gender Inequality Index standards to evaluate Taiwan as top in Asia and seventh in the world; it also used the World Economic Forum’s 2023 Gender Gap Index evaluation method to rank Taiwan 34th globally, up two places from the previous year.
