A week-long fashion show featuring floral pattern gowns created by Taiwanese designer Jasper Huang kicked off Feb. 9 at the Pavilion of New Fashion of the Taipei International Flora Expo.

Some of the works on display, such as a red gown with 3D paper cuttings and feathers, were inspired by peonies in traditional Chinese paintings, according to expo organizer the Taipei City government.

“The feathers on the dresses were glued on one by one and the paper cuttings are also all handmade,” Huang said, adding that the 3D outfit took him one-and-a-half months to make. “I hope to let people understand that Taiwan is absolutely capable of producing high-end clothes.”

All of Huang’s works featured at the show are limited editions that will be eventually sold to international customers in Japan, the Taipei City government added. Huang is due to open his first overseas store in Tokyo, Japan, next month.

“I am honored that my designs are being displayed at this international event,” Huang said. “To be recognized by the government is like a guarantee of the quality of my work.”

Excelling in blending Eastern and Western elements into his designs, Huang became in 2009 the first Taiwanese to receive an International Designer Award from the International Apparel Federation.

Other guests invited to participate in the fashion show include Japanese and Brazilian model Akemi Barbara Katsuki, Japanese singer Akinori Nakagawa and top French hairstylist Alexandre Zouari.

The fashion show runs until Feb. 15 and is open to the public, organizers said. (HZW)
