The first national group from Taiwan will take part in the upcoming Global City Teams Challenge Expo in Washington as part of central government efforts promoting advances in smart city development by the local public sector.
Organized by Asia Silicon Valley Development Agency under the National Development Council, the group comprises officials from the six special municipalities of Kaohsiung, New Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Taipei and Taoyuan cities in Taiwan proper, as well as outlying Penghu County. It is participating in the Aug. 28-29 event at the invitation of the American Institute in Taiwan.
The group will be joined by private sector partners in showcasing some of the nation’s most innovative smart city solutions at a Taiwan pavilion set up at the event. These include New Taipei’s high-tech defense project, Taichung’s smart response and traffic control systems, Tainan’s intelligent parking system, Taoyuan’s citizen card and Penghu’s low-carbon smart island development initiative.
According to the agency, the high-tech defense and citizen card projects are expected to generate great interest among visitors to the pavilion. The former aims to enhance policing and public safety through cutting-edge technology, while the latter offers instant access to the latest information on municipal services.
NDC Deputy Minister Kung Ming-hsin said these award-winning projects will help boost Taiwan’s reputation as a global leader in smart city solutions on the road to spurring related exports and facilitating industrial upgrades in the country’s information and communication technology sector.
The group will also take the opportunity to invite other participants to send representations to the Smart City Summit and Expo scheduled for March 27-30 in Taipei, he added.
Launched in 2014 by the National Institute of Standards and Technology under the U.S. Department of Commerce, this year’s edition of the event involves more than 100 cities and communities worldwide in collaboration with over 300 businesses, government agencies, nonprofit organizations and universities.
