The strong support by allies and members of the Formosa Club in Europe for Taiwan’s professional, pragmatic and constructive participation in the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Paris Agreement and associated mechanisms is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Dec. 3.
According to the MOFA, during the High-Level Segment of the 28th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC Dec. 2 in Dubai, Philip Joseph Pierre, Terrance Drew, Kausea Natano and Russell Mmiso Dlamini, prime ministers of allies St. Lucia, St. Christopher and Nevis, Tuvalu and the Kingdom of Eswatini, respectively, all called for Taiwan’s inclusion in the U.N. specialized agency.
Pierre said Taiwan should not be excluded from global work to build a safer environment; Drew described Taiwan as a trustworthy partner that should be allowed to play a meaningful role in tackling the climate crisis; Natano urged U.N. members states to recognize Taiwan’s contributions to climate change and public health issues; while Russell called for Taiwan’s formal participation in UNFCCC discussions as no one should be left behind when it comes to ensuring sustainable green initiatives and economic development.
Their remarks follow identical stances expressed by Palau President Surangel Whipps, Jr. and Paraguay President Santiago Pena Palacios at the High-Level Segment held the previous day, as well as the Nov. 28 joint letter by the co-chairs and members of the Formosa Club in Europe and Canada urging UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell to invite Taiwan to take part in the body as an observer and regularize Taiwan’s participation in all its meetings, the Paris Agreement and associated mechanisms.
As a responsible member of the global community, Taiwan is committed to working closely with allies and partners to achieve net-zero emissions and is also intent on making further contributions to address climate change challenges, the MOFA said. (SFC-E)
