The annual Taiwan Arts Festival will get underway Oct. 9 through Nov. 22 in Hong Kong, spotlighting friendly cultural exchanges between the two sides and helping promote further artistic collaboration.

Organized by Hong Kong-based Kwang Hwa Information and Culture Center under the Ministry of Culture, the event titled “Ciao! Taiwan” reflects upon the festival’s development over the past 15 years and charts a new course for the future.

As COVID-19 continues to impact people’s lives, organizers hope the festival will prove uplifting to Hongkongers during the challenging times.

According to the KHICC, this year’s edition features eight activities paying tribute to tradition while honoring avant-garde innovation. The program includes exhibitions of traditional Taiwan handicrafts and design works of young talents from both sides; Hakka dance and jazz music performances; an online exhibit showcasing Taiwan’s comic artists and their works; and a seminar on children’s literature.

A highlight of the festival is “Spirits,” a production combining piano solos, monologues, and poetry with light and shadow effects to re-enact five classical love stories. Renowned actress, director, and playwright Sylvia Chang from Taiwan is expected to captivate audiences as narrator.

“Film Retrospective of Wang Toon” will screen seven works by the Taiwan director, who is a pioneer of the country’s New Wave Cinema movement. He will sit down with the audience in a post-screening session to discuss the background of his films. (SFC-E)
