Taiwan comic artist Evergreen Yeh has been selected for an artist residency at Hablar en Arte in Spain through a collaboration between the Ministry of Culture and the art collective.

Yeh’s project proposal impressed the judges with its depiction of spirit animals on a fantasy journey, the MOC said.

According to the MOC, Yeh was previously selected to feature at the Taiwan Pavilion for the 2022 Angouleme International Comics Festival in France, and he won bronze at the 2021 Japan International MANGA Award for his comic book, “Mayfly Island.”

The residency program facilitates exchanges among cartoonists from around the globe and local artists, the MOC said. The winner is also scheduled to visit the Madrid Comic Pop-up and other related events, the ministry added.

To promote cross-border collaboration and increase the visibility of graphic artists from Taiwan, the MOC has partnered with France’s Maison des Auteurs since 2015 and bd BOUM residency program in 2018, as well as Hablar en Arte and Japan’s Kitakyushu residency program in 2022. A total of 22 Taiwan comic artists have been chosen for these joint programs.

Founded in 2002, Hablar en Arte is a Madrid-based nonprofit organization conceived as a laboratory for artistic projects and social innovation. The collective is rooted in contemporary creation, cultural mediation, art and education cross-overs, and new or alternative institutional systems. (DL-E)
