A Taiwan-Spain art exchange exhibition is underway in Pingtung County, further strengthening the bonds of creativity between talents in the two countries.

Staged at National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, the 13-week event features 88 pieces from 28 Taiwan and 12 Spanish artists. These comprise installations, oil and watercolor paintings, photographs, prints and sculptures.

An official with organizer International Association of Pingtung County Cultural Arts said Sept. 5 that the small works are presented in their original frames and there are no distracting decorations anywhere in the facility.

“We want showgoers to immerse themselves in the creative experience,” the official said, adding that even the opening ceremony was held in keeping with this purist approach.

“It was like a party. There were no speeches and attendees enjoyed performances by child singing groups, street artists and even those bold guests swept up in the moment.”

Talents showing at the event include Chen Chu-shi, Chuang Ming-chi, Fan Jyun-ming and Lin Shui-wang of Taiwan, as well as Luis Gonzalez Boix, Diego Canogar, Czili and Ricardo Santonja from Spain.

A highlight of the exhibition is an installation by Chuang, who was inspired by a metro commuting experience when studying in Spain. It encapsulates a sense of grief and helplessness when it comes to the growing global population and resulting arrogance, rapaciousness and selfishness of human beings.

Equally eye-catching are artworks by Canogar and Czili. The former’s bubble-shaped iron stand produces a spectacular lighting atmosphere, while the latter’s musical notes on a light-colored base canvas create an abstract image bursting with movement.

Since its establishment last year, the association has successfully staged a number of international-themed events. Further plans in the pipeline include collaboration with artists from Italy, New Zealand and the U.S. (YCH-JSM)
