Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu accepted a copy of the credentials of Candice Pitts, new ambassador of Belize to the ROC (Taiwan), while exchanging views on a range of issues pertinent to bilateral relations, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs April 6.

Wu, who extended a warm welcome to Pitts, said he looks forward to working with the Central American ally’s ambassador in deepening friendship and expanding cooperation between the two countries, adding that he hopes she will enjoy the beautiful scenery of Taiwan and the friendliness of the country’s people.

In response, Pitts called Taiwan an important ally of Belize and expressed gratitude for its efforts in proposing and implementing projects promoting the welfare of the people. Taiwan’s contributions to strengthening the Central American country’s COVID-19 response are also deeply appreciated, she said.

With the agreement on economic cooperation signed by the two sides last September set to take effect as soon as possible, more Taiwan investment delegations will be welcomed to visit Belize as the pandemic eases to boost trade between the two countries, Pitts added.

In a tweet on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Twitter account, the MOFA said “Minister Wu was pleased to meet with Candice Pitts & accept the copy of her credentials as #Belize’s ambassador to #Taiwan. We wish our friend from #CentralAmerica all the best & anticipate cooperating closely in strengthening bilateral ties across a broad spectrum of areas.”

Pitts is a politician and educator who previously served as a member of the Belize City Council. She specializes in issues like community and national development, as well as women’s empowerment.

Former Belize Ambassador Diane C. Haylock served four years in the post. Last December she was awarded the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon in recognition of her contributions to strengthening Taiwan-Belize relations. (YCH-E)
