President Tsai Ing-wen launched the country’s first squadron of upgraded F-16V fighter jets Nov. 18 in the southern county of Chiayi, reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding Taiwan’s airspace.

According to Tsai, the upgrade highlights the success of government efforts strengthening Taiwan-US relations as well as the country’s aerospace technologies and defense capabilities. The former is evidenced by cooperation between Taiwan and the U.S. defense industry, demonstrating the advancement of the two countries’ friendship and the firm promises made by the close partners, she added.

Tsai made the remarks while attending the commission ceremony for the upgraded F-16V fighter jets at an air force base in Chiayi County, southern Taiwan.

Other high-profile attendees at the ceremony were Chiu Kuo-cheng, minister of defense; and Sandra Oudkirk, director of the American Institute in Taiwan.

Tsai saluted military officers and soldiers for their selfless sacrifice on the job, which often involves long hours, as they carry out a variety of missions, such as monitoring encroachments into Taiwan’s airspace and ensuring the rapid expulsion of such aircraft. These efforts are instrumental in safeguarding the country and its people, she added.

Tsai also took the opportunity to offer her gratitude to Taiwan’s Aerospace Industrial Development Corp. and U.S. defense firm Lockheed Martin Corp. for facilitating the upgrade, which will substantially strengthen the national defense. (DL-E)
