Taiwan will host the World Movement for Democracy’s 11th Global Assembly in 2022, underscoring the government’s commitment to strengthening cooperation among like-minded partners in resisting authoritarianism.

Taking place Oct. 24 to 27 in Taipei City, the event brings together around 400 activists and experts from dozens of countries. They will share experiences in building resilient democratic institutions and defending civic space via panel discussions and workshops.

Describing Taiwan as a thriving and vigorous democracy, the WMD said this success is crucial to global efforts defending related ideas, infrastructure and principles. The unanimous decision to choose Taiwan as the location for the assembly reaffirms the international community’s commitment to embracing and standing with Taiwan, the WMD added.

According to local co-organizer Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, the assembly also serves as a world-class platform for next-generation advocates to share visions for a democratic future. These youth leaders will strategize in response to emerging challenges like dysfunctional democratic institutions, the economic and social impact of COVID-19 and climate change, as well as the rise of digital authoritarianism, the TFD said.

Another highlight of the event, the TFD said, is the presentation of the WMD’s Democracy Courage Tributes to movements demonstrating extraordinary courage outside the spotlight of world attention.

Established in 1999 with Washington-based National Endowment for Democracy as its secretariat, the WMD is a global network of forces for good cooperating in the promotion of democracy. (SFC-E)
