A shipment of 5.5 tons of goods is on its way to Ukraine, underscoring support from the government and people of Taiwan for the East European country in its time of need, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said March 17.

The supplies are part of a donation drive initiated by the MOFA earlier this month for those affected by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine since February 24. The resulting humanitarian crisis has forced at least 3 million Ukrainians to flee their country, the ministry said.

The MOFA said over 50 tons of supplies have been collected so far and will be delivered in batches to countries taking in Ukrainian refugees including Poland and Slovakia.

During a ceremony at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu said people can fully relate to the situation in Ukraine as Taiwan is constantly under threat by China.

As a member of the democratic world, the government is committed to demonstrating that Taiwan Can Help Ukraine by supplying much-needed humanitarian aid, he added.

The minister also took the opportunity to thank volunteers, local businesses and civic groups for helping organize the goods and facilitate delivery. Their selfless contributions are a genuine testament to the people of Taiwan as a force for good, he said.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Humanitarian supplies donated by #Taiwan’s freedom- & democracy-loving people are en route to the kindred spirits of #Ukraine impacted by #Russia’s invasion. Minister Wu & good friends from #Europe conveyed heartfelt gratitude & wished the shipments Godspeed. #StandWithUkraine.” (SFC-E)
