Support from Japan and the EU for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said May 13.

The ministry’s statement came in response to a joint statement made by Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, following the 28th EU-Japan Summit meeting that concluded May 12 in Tokyo.

Both sides emphasized the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and encouraged the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues. According to the MOFA, the inclusion of this item in the statement demonstrates that maintaining the cross-strait status quo holds consensus in the international democratic community.

As a front-line state facing authoritarian expansion and challenges to rules-based international order, Taiwan is committed to deepening partnerships with Japan and the EU to safeguard universal values of freedom and democracy, the ministry added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “We welcome the #EU-#Japan statement underscoring the importance of peace & stability across the Taiwan Strait & encouraging the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues. #Taiwan will keep working with both partners across the board.” (YCH-E)
