Nicola Beer, vice president of the European Parliament, and her delegation commenced a three-day visit to Taiwan July 19 aimed at deepening strategic cooperation in key areas impacting democratic development worldwide.

Highlights of the group’s itinerary include an audience with President Tsai Ing-wen, meetings with Premier Su Tseng-chang, Legislative Yuan Vice President Tsai Chi-chang, Digital Minister Audrey Tang and Mainland Affairs Council Minister Chiu Tai-san, as well as a banquet hosted by Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu. They will also take part in a series of roundtables with civil organizations and think tanks.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Beer is a staunch supporter of Taiwan who consistently backs resolutions urging the country’s participation in U.N. specialized agencies like the World Health Assembly and other international organization. She also openly called on the EU and its member states to strengthen relations with Taiwan during an online news conference, the MOFA added.

The delegation’s trip follows a similar high-level visit by the EP Special Committee on Foreign Interference in all Democratic Processes in the EU, including Disinformation last November, the ministry said. This again demonstrates EP support for Taiwan and its 23.5 million people, as well as a joint commitment to defending freedom, democracy and rules-based order, the MOFA added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the ministry said “Deputy Minister Tien extended a hearty #Taiwan welcome to @nicolabeerfdp, vice president of @Europarl_En, & her delegation. We appreciate the timely 3-day visit of our #EU friends, & trust it will deepen cooperation in defending the democratic world’s cherished shared values.” (DL-E)
