U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her congressional delegation touched down Aug. 2 in Taiwan on a two-day visit aimed at showing support for the country and deepening bilateral cooperation.

The group comprises Gregory Meeks, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee; Mark Takano, chair of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs; Rep. Suzan DelBene, vice chair of the House Ways and Means Committee; Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, chair of the House Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy; and Rep. Andy Kim, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Pelosi, the first woman to serve as speaker of the House, is a staunch supporter of Taiwan who has backed the country publicly on numerous occasions, the MOFA said. She has held the position since 2019 and previously during 2011 and 2007, the ministry added.

This is the first time in 25 years for a congressional delegation led by a U.S. House speaker to visit Taiwan, the MOFA said. It follows a trip by Newt Gingrich in 1997, and further demonstrates rock-solid U.S. support for Taiwan and its 23.5 million people, the ministry added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “It's wheels down for the top-flight congressional delegation led by @SpeakerPelosi & comprising @RepGregoryMeeks, @RepMarkTakano, @RepDelBene, @CongressmanRaja & @RepAndyKimNJ. Minister Wu welcomed our faithful #US friends & wished them a superb visit. #Taiwan is not alone!” (DL-E)
