Support from Taiwan’s allies for cross-strait peace and stability is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The joint statement voicing this backing was released Aug. 23 by the Permanent Representatives to the U.N. of Belize, Eswatini, Guatemala, Haiti, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, Paraguay, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Tuvalu.
The document expressed grave concern over China’s continued military exercises around Taiwan and emphasized that any international disputes should be resolved by peaceful means based on the principles of the U.N. Charter.
It called on the U.N. and the international community to urge Beijing to cease its drills immediately. Neither side of the Taiwan Strait is subordinate to the other, it said, adding that China should respect the Taiwan Strait’s median line.
According to the MOFA, Beijing’s attempts to unilaterally change the cross-strait status quo and undermine regional peace and stability are once again condemned by the government and people. Its military threat not only puts international order at risk but also impacts global trade and transportation, the ministry said.
In addition, China continues to distort the U.N. Resolution 2758, adopted in 1971, to exclude Taiwan from international participation, the MOFA said, adding that members of the international community should jointly condemn Beijing’s irresponsible actions while urging it to abide by the U.N. Charter in prohibiting the use of force and halt any form of coercion against the country.
Taiwan and its allies share universal values of freedom and democracy, the MOFA said. The government is committed to working with friends to oppose China’s sabotage of regional security through military provocation and to safeguard rules-based international order, the ministry added. (YCH-E)
