The government and people of Taiwan extended their warmest congratulations Nov. 24 to Dato’ Seri Haji Anwar bin Ibrahim, who was appointed Malaysia’s 10th prime minister, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Taiwan and Malaysia enjoy substantial exchanges in areas spanning culture, economics, education, technology and trade, the MOFA said. It is also one of the key target countries in Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy, the ministry added.

A key plank in the government’s national development strategy, the NSP seeks to deepen Taiwan’s agricultural, business, cultural, education, tourism and trade ties with the 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations member states, six South Asian countries, Australia and New Zealand.

According to the MOFA, Malaysia is Taiwan’s seventh-largest trading partner, and the source of a large number of both foreign and overseas Chinese students studying in the country’s universities and colleges.

The government is committed to working with the new Malaysia administration to strengthen cooperation under the NSP, the MOFA said, adding that the two sides will contribute to maintaining regional peace and stability to achieve a free and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “The government of #Taiwan congratulates @PakatanHarapan_ Chairman @AnwarIbrahim on his swearing-in as the new prime minister of #Malaysia. We look forward to further strengthening ties between our countries & promoting regional peace, stability & prosperity under his tenure.” (YCH-E)
