Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu said Taiwan is committed to working with like-minded partners to safeguard freedom and democracy while urging the democratic world to stand in unity to counter authoritarian expansion.

Wu made the remarks in an interview with i24NEWS TV channel’s correspondent Yoseph Haddad for a program that was broadcast Dec. 28 by the Israel-based media outlet.

According to Wu, the government wants to deepen the relationship with Israel’s new administration. Taiwan and Israel share universal values and strengths in trade, Wu said, pledging to boost exchanges in areas spanning investment, culture, education and tourism.

The countries recently co-hosted several workshops under the Global Cooperation and Training Framework, Wu said. The two sides will cooperate further to combat disinformation and expand in the digital economy, information and maritime security sectors under the GCTF, he added.

Wu additionally discussed the cross-strait relationship. Taiwan is a sovereign nation and its people will defend its sovereignty and democratic way of life, he said, adding that the country will continue to strengthen its defense while seeking support from other democracies.

Taiwan joined with U.N. member states to impose sanctions on Russia and provide humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, Wu said. This demonstrates that Taiwan is a responsible global member and force for good, despite China’s attempts to hinder such international relations, he added. (YCH-E)
