Eight members of the U.S. House of Representatives arrived April 6 for a visit that is sincerely welcomed by the government and people of Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Led by Rep. Michael McCaul, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the group includes Reps. Young Kim, Ami Bera, French Hill, Guy Reschenthaler, Madeleine Dean, Michael Lawler and Nathaniel Moran.

During their three-day stay, the legislators will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President Lai Ching-te, attend banquets hosted by Legislative Yuan President You Si-kun and MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu, and exchange views on bilateral relations and other key issues with senior officials.

According to the MOFA, McCaul, who is visiting Taiwan for the first time, is one of the country’s strongest supporters in the U.S. Congress and has been a driving force behind all major congressional actions and resolutions backing it in recent years, including the Taiwan Policy Act.

At a time when global and regional political landscapes are undergoing rapid changes and Taiwan is faced with heightened threats and coercion from China, the visit underscores the firm bipartisan support from the U.S. and the importance it attaches to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, the ministry said.

The MOFA expects the visit to further cement the robust ties between Taiwan and the U.S. and deepen their partnership across the board. (SFC-E)
