The passage of a resolution by the German Bundestag calling for Taiwan’s inclusion in the World Health Organization is highly welcomed by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said May 13.

Approved overwhelmingly the previous day, the bill was proposed by the EU member state’s ruling coalition and follows a similar one passed by the law-making body in May 2022. Such unwavering support for Taiwan’s international participation is deeply appreciated, the ministry added.

According to the MOFA, the bill requires the German government to continue advocating for Taiwan’s observer status in the World Health Assembly and other U.N.-affiliated bodies.

Taiwan and Germany are like-minded democratic partners and enjoy robust bilateral relations, the ministry said, citing the visit by Federal Minister of Education and Research Bettina Stark-Watzinger in March, which marked the first ministerial visit since 1997.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has also stressed at several public venues the importance of maintaining cross-strait peace and stability and Taiwan’s key role in the global economy, the MOFA added.

Based on this solid foundation, the government will continue cooperating with Germany to expand two-way exchanges and promote shared democratic values for the well-being of people around the world, the ministry said. (SFC-E)
