The government of Taiwan will donate US$5 million to a project led by Lithuania’s Central Project Management Agency to assist with reconstruction efforts in Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said June 1.

The announcement was made by Deputy Foreign Minister Roy Chun Lee during a conference June 1 in Vilnius. The event, held by the parliament of the EU member state, involved officials including Erika Kurockina,  one of Lithuania’s vice ministers of economy and innovation, and Gintautas Jakstas, one of its vice ministers of education, science and sport.

During the conference, Lee said Taiwan, Lithuania and Ukraine are all democratic countries on the frontlines of authoritarianism. The pledge to help Ukraine underscores the like-minded partners’ commitment to serving as forces for good in the world, he added.

According to the MOFA, the fund will be used to rebuild a school and a kindergarten near the capital city of Kyiv. More than 1,000 children will benefit from the new facilities when the sites reopen in September, the ministry added.

Two days before taking part in the Lithuanian conference, Lee attended the Bratislava Forum in Slovakia, which is organized by locally based think tank Globsec. The deputy minister delivered a speech headlined “Ukraine and Taiwan: Why Global Unity Matters.” The event was attended by heads of state, experts and officials from 60 countries around the world, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Slovakia President Zuzana Caputova and Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, the ministry said.
