The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sincerely welcomed the show of support from the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee for Taiwan’s sovereignty in a policy review report published by the British parliamentary body Aug. 30.

In the document, which evaluates and makes suggestions regarding the United Kingdom’s foreign policy in the Indo-Pacific, the committee calls for the government to contribute to the defense of the right of Taiwan’s people to self-determination. It is in this context that the Foreign Affairs Committee acknowledges Taiwan as a de facto independent country, citing factors such as its government, clearly defined territory and permanent population.

The committee also urges the British government to increase high-level official visits between the U.K. and Taiwan and to use its position as a new member in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership to campaign for Taiwan’s admission.

The MOFA described the U.K. as a like-minded partner and said that Taiwan has been deepening collaboration with the country in education, economy and trade, offshore wind power, technology, and the semiconductor industry. Taiwan’s government will continue to promote cooperation and exchange with the U.K. in a variety of fields with the aim of creating prosperity and welfare for the people of both nations, the ministry added.
