Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu said Taiwan will leave no stone unturned in trying to prevent war despite China’s escalating military threats and economic coercion.
He made the remarks during an online interview with Caroline Roux, host of the France 5 program “It’s in the Air,” and the minister’s perspectives were incorporated into the documentary “Tomorrow’s War—Is France Ready?” aired Sept. 24. The film also featured several prominent European officials and academics, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Despite predictions of war potentially breaking out in 2027, Wu said a battle is neither imminent nor unavoidable. With the help of U.S. defensive weapons and military personnel training, Taiwan is actively enhancing its self-defense capabilities, he added.
Leaders around the world have urged China to refrain from attempting to unilaterally change the status quo on multiple occasions, the minister said, adding that cross-strait peace and stability is indispensable to world security and prosperity given that half of the world’s cargo passes through the Taiwan Strait and 90 percent of advanced chips are produced in Taiwan.
If China were to start a war, not only would the global economy be severely impacted, but China would also pay a heavy price, the minister added.
Wu asserted that no country has the right to launch a military attack on another sovereign state. Speaking on the Russia-Ukraine war, he said the government firmly condemns the invasion and has been providing humanitarian relief to affected Ukrainians, whose bravery and determination to defend freedom and sovereignty is an inspiration to Taiwan.
