A working group meeting aimed at expanding Taiwan’s participation in the U.N. system and in other international forums took place Dec. 13 in Washington, D.C., according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Jointly organized by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S. and the American Institute in Taiwan, the daylong event was attended by representatives of the MOFA and the U.S. Department of State.
The discussion centered on opportunities to support Taiwan’s inclusion in the International Civil Aviation Organization, global public health bodies such as the World Health Assembly, and non-U.N. international, regional and multilateral organizations.
Participants also spoke about ways to address global challenges such as aviation safety, climate change and the environment, public health, and transnational crime, as well as the enhancement of technical standards and economic cooperation.
According to the MOFA, long-term efforts on the part of the U.S. to rally members of the global community around Taiwan’s international engagement are deeply appreciated. The U.S. attendees also highlighted Taiwan’s expertise in areas spanning aviation green fuels, food security, health and women’s economic and political empowerment, while reiterating their country’s commitment to Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the ICAO and the World Health Organization, the ministry said.
Both parties recognized the importance of working closely with like-minded partners who shared their concerns, and pledged to continue expanding Taiwan’s presence in the global space in creative ways, the MOFA added. (YCH-E)
