A bipartisan delegation from the U.S. House of Representatives arrived March 27 in Taiwan for a three-day visit, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Led by Jack Bergman, chair of the Subcommittee on Intelligence and Special Operations under the House Armed Services Committee, the group includes Jimmy Panetta and Donald Norcross, ranking member of the Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces.
The delegation’s itinerary encompasses meetings with President Tsai Ing-wen, Vice President and President-elect Lai Ching-te as well as Vice President-elect Hsiao Bi-khim, the MOFA said. They will exchange views on issues such as Taiwan-U.S. relations, and cross-strait and regional security, the ministry added.
According to the MOFA, the current visit followed the trip by Stephanie Murphy, then-vice chair of the ISP subcommittee in 2022. It once again demonstrates the U.S. commitment to security cooperation, and peace and stability both in the Taiwan Strait and in the Indo-Pacific, the MOFA said, adding that it also showed staunch U.S. support for Taiwan in the runup to the 45th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act.
The U.S. Congress has demonstrated its strong bipartisan backing for Taiwan as there have been delegations visiting the country during every recess so far this year, the MOFA said, adding that measures to enhance Taiwan-U.S. security collaboration such as foreign military financing and presidential drawdown authority are increasingly included in the National Defense Authorization Act proposed by the House Armed Services Committee every year.
