An anti-terrorism drill testing the coordinated response capabilities of central and local government agencies was staged Aug. 5 as part of preparations for the 2017 Universiade games in Taipei City. Organized by the Office of Homeland Security under the Executive Yuan in association with the Ministry of the Interior’s Central Security Command Center and the Main Operation Center for the Universiade, the internet- and teleconference-based drill comprised eight scenarios. These included biochemical, cyber and unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, as well as the disabling of electricity substations and explosions at metro stations. Minister without Portfolio Lin Mei-chu said before commencement of the near eight-hour drill that the centers’ communication channels, operating plans and procedures must be fully assessed so as to test their feasibility, identify possible weakness and devise improvements. “The drill is a valuable opportunity for government agencies to bolster their anti-terrorism capabilities and help ensure the success of the Universiade.” Echoing Lin’s remarks, Taipei City Deputy Mayor Chen Chin-jun said he was grateful for the central government’s financial and logistical support in assisting the local government put the proper preparations in place for the games. “As host of the Universiade, we will work with our partners to deliver a successful event showcasing Taiwan and its advanced society.” Su Li-chiung, CEO of the Universiade Organizing Committee, said the drill reaffirms the commitment of central and local government agencies to staging a safe event. “When it comes to security, there is no room for negotiation.” The 29th Summer Universiade is the largest international sports event ever staged in Taiwan.
