The Ministry of National Defense signed a memorandum of understanding with Stanford University’s Hoover Institution Library and Archives March 22 in Taipei City to establish a government-academic collaboration platform for the exchange of historical military records.

Deputy MND Minister Bo Hong-hui and Hoover Institution Deputy Director Eric Wakin inked the pact on behalf of their respective organizations. Under the accord, both sides have agreed to strengthen cooperation between the MND Library and the East Asia Library of Stanford University Libraries, part of the Hoover Institution Library and Archives.

According to the MND, the agreement will enhance the quality of research on the military history of both sides by facilitating greater information sharing through such measures as joint academic training courses and seminars.

The pact marks a new milestone in the MND’s international collaborative efforts given the quantity and significance of historical records held by both parties, the ministry said, adding that the agreement will also help ensure the accurate presentation of past events to future generations.

Established in 1919, the Hoover Institution Library and Archives houses up to 1 million volumes and over 80 million historical documents. Its Chinese collection consists of around 350,000 volumes as well as 28,300 reels of microfilm concerning subjects ranging from politics, law and economics to education, sociology and national defense.
