A documentary on National Taichung Theater received three nominations at the 22nd Asia Television Awards, according to Taichung City Government Nov. 29.

Jointly produced by the central Taiwan municipality and Discovery Channel, “Man Made Marvels: National Taichung Theater” is nominated for Best Documentary Programme, Best Editing and Best Scriptwriting for Web Programme/Series. The winners will be announced Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 in Singapore.

Since its inauguration in 2016, the theater has become one of the city’s major landmarks. The local government said it was pleased to cooperate with Discovery Channel on the eight-year film project, which shines a spotlight on the theater’s innovative architecture and boosts Taichung’s global image.

The most time-consuming project filmed in Taiwan by Discovery Channel, the 45-minute documentary has been broadcast in Australia, Japan, New Zealand and several Southeast Asian nations since its May 28 premiere in Taiwan.

Designed by Pritzker Architecture Prize-winner Toyo Ito, NTT is among the most avant-garde projects by the Japanese architect, TCG said. The design helped him win the 2017 Murano Togo Prize, one of Japan’s most prestigious architecture honors, it added.

Situated on a 5.7-hectare site in the city’s Xitun District, the striking facility utilizes transparent and reflective materials such as glass and aluminum sheeting, and features a beamless design and unique curved walls that produce a free-flowing interior space.

Launched in 1996 by Singapore-based Television Asia Plus magazine, ATA is regarded as one of the most significant and celebrated events within the Asian TV industry. Winners of the awards are determined by an expert panel of over 60 judges from across the region. (SFC-E)
