Taiwan welcomes reiterated support from the European Parliament for the nation’s meaningful international participation, which highlights the long-standing friendship between the two sides, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dec. 14.

The MOFA statement came after the EP passed a resolution the previous day adopting the annual EU Common Foreign and Security Policy report. In Article 31, the parliament restated its firm backing for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations and activities.

In the article, the EP also stressed that preserving peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region is of substantial interest to the EU and its member states. It called on all parties concerned to resolve differences through peaceful means and to refrain from taking unilateral action to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and East and South China seas in order to safeguard regional security.

According to the MOFA, the EP’s statements are consistent with the government’s policies of advancing peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific, maintaining the cross-strait status quo and deepening Taiwan’s engagement in the international community.

In recent years, the EP has consistently expressed strong support for Taiwan’s international participation through resolutions on the annual CFSP report. The ministry called on the EU and its member states to continue supporting the peaceful development of cross-strait ties, upholding the two sides’ shared values of democracy, freedom and human rights, and backing an expanded role for Taiwan in the international community so it can make further contributions to global development.
