Taiwan’s state-backed Industrial Technology Research Institute is a winner of the latest Clarivate Analytics Top 100 Global Innovators Award for its R&D and intellectual property development and protection achievements.

Based in northern Taiwan’s Hsinchu County, ITRI is a two-time recipient of the prestigious annual honor assessed on the patent-related criteria of total volume, application-to-grant success rate, global reach of the portfolio and influence as evidenced by citations. It is one of three government-run organizations making the list alongside France’s Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission and Germany’s Fraunhofer Society.

Recently installed ITRI President Edwin Liu said April 23 that IP is essential in maintaining Taiwan’s competitive edge and spurring industrial innovation. The institute is playing a leading role in this regard, having registered 28,598 patents worldwide and backing local firms with strong R&D support in such areas as digital computing, film and hybrid circuits, and telephone and data transmission systems, he added.

According to Liu, ITRI will continue cultivating high-quality patent portfolios boasting cross-disciplinary technology innovation, as well as significant industry impact and global reach.

Daniel Videtto, president of IP and standards with U.S.-based Clarivate Analytics, said during the presentation ceremony at ITRI headquarters that the award is a celebration of the institute’s relentless drive for excellence in innovation, a cornerstone of its success as one of the world’s leading high-tech research organizations.

Founded in 1973, ITRI plays an instrumental role in fostering Taiwan’s innovation-driven sectors. It has helped incubate over 270 cutting-edge companies, including global integrated circuit powerhouse Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (SFC-E)
