Taiwan Today launches Southeast Asian language editions

May 22, 2018
The launch of the Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese versions of the MOFA-operated news website Taiwan Today is expected to help strengthen communication and exchanges with the New Southbound Policy target countries. (MOFA)
Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese language versions of the Taiwan Today news website were launched May 21 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

These editions aim to strengthen the ministry’s new media capabilities and expand exchanges with target countries of the New Southbound Policy, two of Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu’s eight main objectives for his first 100 days in office, according to the MOFA.

A key plank of President Tsai Ing-wen’s national development strategy, the policy seeks to deepen Taiwan’s agricultural, business, cultural, education, tourism and trade ties with the 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations member states, six South Asian countries, Australia and New Zealand.

TT is a relaunch of Taiwan Journal, an English-language weekly newspaper first published in 1964. The website offers a range of in-depth news articles, feature stories and photos tracking the latest cultural, economic, political and social developments from around the nation.

With the new additions, the portal is available in nine languages including English, French, Germany, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. TT is part of the ministry’s diverse media platforms aimed at raising global awareness of Taiwan, including an official Facebook page and Twitter account as well as bimonthly print and online editions of the Taiwan Review magazine and its archive dating back to 1951.
