A memorandum of understanding on film archive development and preservation technology exchanges was concluded June 29 by Taiwan’s Public Television Service and France’s National Audiovisual Institute (INA).

Under the pact inked in Taipei City by Taiwan PTS Foundation Chairperson Tchen Yu-chiou and Myriam Kryger, INA’s director of communications and head of its International Affairs Delegation, the organizations will offer access to their respective archives, co-organize training programs for industry professionals and share the latest developments in conservation techniques.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Tchen said that the accord will strengthen the technological capabilities of Taipei-based PTS as well as pave the way for collaboration in promoting new productions. Noting she experienced firsthand INA’s cutting-edge technologies for building audiovisual archives while visiting the Paris-headquartered institution in February, Tchen expressed hope that this agreement will help the Taiwan TV operator bolster use of its substantial collection in the local filmmaking sector.

According to Kryger, the accord is INA’s first with a film preservation and production organization in the Mandarin-speaking world. The pact opens the door to long-term meaningful collaborative ties between the two sides, Kryger said, adding she is confident that related knowledge and resource-sharing projects will help PTS turn a new page in promoting utilization of its archives.

The first initiative under the pact is a two-day training program for Taiwan film industry professionals on adapting archival materials. This workshop is scheduled to take place June 20-21, 2019, in Taipei.

Established in 1974, INA is a global leader in film preservation, housing over 17 million hours of audiovisual content as of the end of 2017. PTS, founded in 1998, is an independent nonprofit organization operating three free-to-air TV channels. (CPY-E)
