Taiwan’s EVA Airways was named the fifth best carrier globally in the 2018 World Airline Awards announced July 17 by U.K.-based aviation analysis group Skytrax.

In the ranking of 335 international airlines, the company based in northern Taiwan’s Taoyuan City improved one spot from last year. It also placed first for airport service, second for cleanest cabins and fifth for cabin crew, while retaining its prestigious five-star rating from Skytrax for the third consecutive year.

The awards, considered the Oscars of the airline industry, are based on 20.36 million surveys completed by travelers from more than 100 countries and territories between August 2017 and May 2018. Asian carriers dominated the poll, with Singapore Airlines topping the rankings, followed by Qatar Airways, All Nippon Airways and Emirates, in that order.

EVA President Clay Sun, in a statement issued the following day, attributed the airline’s strong showing to the dedication of its staff. “It is a great honor to be recognized by travelers from around the globe,” he said, adding that the company will never lose sight of its goal to become the best in the world.

Established in 1989 as Taiwan’s first privately owned international carrier, EVA flies to more than 60 destinations throughout Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania. It is the eighth airline globally to receive Skytrax’s five-star rating.

The company is frequently recognized for its excellent safety record. Australia-headquartered aviation reviews website AirlineRatings.com named it one of the world’s 20 safest airlines for the fifth consecutive year in its latest survey released in January, and Germany-based Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre listed EVA 15th globally in its 2018 safety rankings.
