A back-end facility for dynamic random-access memory manufacturing was inaugurated Oct. 26 by semiconductor giant Micron Technology Inc. in Taichung City’s Central Taiwan Science Park.

The site, which complements Micron’s two fabs in the central Taiwan metropolis and northern Taiwan’s Taoyuan City, is the only one in the U.S. outfit’s network with DRAM vertical-integration manufacturing capacity. It is expected to require an additional 1,000 employees, bringing Micron’s workforce to 8,000 in Taiwan.

Kung Ming-hsin, deputy minister of economic affairs, said during his address at the launch ceremony that Micron is encouraged to develop more technologies in Taiwan and take full advantage of the nation’s high-tech talent pool, powerful industry clusters and strong cooperative relationships with global businesses.

In the next five to 10 years, Taiwan is on track to becoming one of the world’s top semiconductor powerhouses, Kung said, adding that this is evidenced by steadily increasing foreign investment in the local sector.

According to Taichung City Government, the new facility is a vote of confidence in Taiwan’s technology prowess and the key role the country plays in the global information and communication technology supply chain. It will also enhance Taichung’s competitiveness and create value-added jobs for homegrown talent, TCG said.

Brent Christensen, director of the American Institute in Taiwan, said the U.S. is committed to standing with Taiwan to develop cutting-edge innovations of the future. As a long-trusted manufacturer of semiconductors, Taiwan is one of the U.S.’s closest and most indispensable partners when it comes to investing in the sector, he added. (KWS-E)
