The short film “A Promise to the Land” was released Nov. 5 on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs-backed Trending Taiwan YouTube channel to spotlight the nation’s merits as a valuable global partner in combating climate change and promoting sustainable development.
Shot on location in Myanmar and subtitled in nine languages including English, Japanese, French, Vietnamese and Indonesian, the two-minute video explores Taiwan’s efforts to provide clean energy in remote areas of the Southeast Asian country.
The film is narrated by 8-year-old Hemyantong and charts how his life has changed since the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) installed a solar power system in his home village of Larkar in Sagaing Region.
According to the MOFA, the video showcases Taiwan’s commitment to promoting environmental protection and sustainable growth around the world through sharing its development and technological expertise.
Launched in 2016, the TaiwanICDF initiative erected solar minigrid systems in rural communities of Myanmar’s Sagaing and Magway regions. According to the nation’s foremost foreign aid organization, some 560 households have benefited from these efforts.
The project is one of numerous sustainable development programs enacted by TaiwanICDF in diplomatic allies and partner nations around the globe. Its ongoing aid work in the Asia-Pacific, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean spans such areas as agriculture, clean energy, education, food safety and health care.
“A Promise to the Land” is part of a MOFA campaign themed Combating Climate Change: Taiwan Can Help aimed at highlighting Taiwan’s desire and ability to participate in the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change. (KWS-E)
