The European Parliament resolution expressing support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations, mechanisms and activities is appreciated by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dec. 12.

Adopted during a plenary session the same day in response to the annual report on the implementation of the EU Common Foreign and Security Policy, the resolution also encourages a speedy resumption of cross-strait talks.

It further calls on all parties in the Indo-Pacific to solve differences through peaceful means and to refrain from taking unilateral actions to change the status quo, including in the East and South China seas, in order to safeguard regional security.

The MOFA welcomed the resolution and expressed gratitude to the EP for its friendship and backing. As an important member of the Indo-Pacific, Taiwan is committed to working closely with other nations in fostering regional stability and security, the ministry said.

Taiwan will continue to steadily deepen substantive collaboration with the EU and other like-minded partners in preserving peace and promoting prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, the MOFA added.

The latest development follows the EP’s approval of the EU-China relations report during a Sept. 12 session. That resolution reaffirmed the parliament’s backing for Taiwan’s meaningful engagement in global bodies including the International Civil Aviation Organization and the World Health Organization and reiterated support for a Taiwan-EU bilateral investment agreement.
