Taiwan talents are showcasing the country’s cultural dynamics while deepening exchanges with creators from across the globe at the Performing Arts Meeting in Yokohama (TPAM) running Feb. 12-15 in Japan, the National Culture and Arts Foundation said.
The Taipei City-based foundation is staging two shows via its Artwave—Taiwan International Arts Network as well as several workshops to introduce the country’s dance and music scenes at one of the biggest networking events for performing arts in Asia. The acts, “The Spectrums” and “Recalling Voices,” are curated by Yao Lee-chun from Taiwan and New York-based Aki Onda from Japan, respectively.
NCAF Chairperson Lin Mun-lee said Artwave’s cooperation with TPAM underscores the platform’s commitment to expanding ties with overseas professionals. Collaboration with curators from around the world helps to bring new perspectives to avant-garde work by local artists, she added.
“The Spectrums” features Cheng Yin-chen’s “The Sewing of Time,” a sound art performance that incorporates the traditional musical genre of nanguan and a contemporary dance piece “Khing” by Lin I-chin that is influenced by folk funeral parades.
“Recalling Voices” is made up of two interactive pieces. Lin Chi-wei’s “Tape Music” allows the audience to co-compose a score by chanting random words written on a length of ribbon while “Southern Clairaudience” by Wang Hong-kai is based on the concept of rediscovering missing histories.
Artwave, established by the NCAF last year, is tasked with forging links between local artists and major cultural festivals and organizations worldwide. (CPY-E)
